On Saturday 4 April, we’ll be meeting at the Seferihisar Garden—Turkey’s first Slow Food Farm—at Sevilma. Throughout the day, we’ll explore agroecology, the concept of production in harmony with nature, and how we can design a farm by interpreting nature. In this workshop, we will approach farming not as something in opposition to nature, but as a way of life established in harmony with it. Together, we will observe how water, soil and biodiversity are integral parts of farming; we will examine Sevilma’s agroecological production approach first-hand.
During the nature literacy walk we’ll be holding at the workshop, we’ll work together to interpret the clues provided by nature when designing a farm. To understand the land, we will observe key elements such as aspect, slope, water movement, soil structure and vegetation cover in the field, and discuss how this data is used in agricultural design. We will explore agroecological principles in ancient production basins.
By observing the agroecological approaches practised at Sevilma, Turkey’s first Slow Food Farm, we will discuss together how production in harmony with nature is possible. In the final session, drawing on all these observations, we will work together to create a model agroecological farm design. We will experience a design approach shaped by an understanding of nature’s rhythms, the movement of water, the character of the soil and biodiversity.
This gathering is not merely an opportunity to discuss farm design, but also an invitation to learn to read nature, to understand the ecological roots of agriculture, and to rediscover the connection we have with nature.
During the day, we will also experience Sevilma’s agroecological approach to production and the rhythms of the seasons; we will come together around the themes of good, clean and fair food. At lunchtime, we will share a meal together featuring seasonal cuisine inspired by Seferihisar’s local culinary culture.
